What is the difference between Meropenem and Meropenem trihydrate?
Jun 18,2025
Meropenem Trihydrate is the hydrate form of Meropenem, a broad-spectrum carbapenem that can be used for a variety of infections, especially complicated infections. This carbapenem is usually diluted to 50 mg/mL and is generally given by IV over about 15 to 30 minutes. Sometimes, to maximize its effectiveness, it can be given as an IV infusion over 3 to 4 hours or as an IV infusion (5 to 20 mL) over about 5 minutes as needed.
Both work in a similar way, interfering with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall components, which causes cell death or prevents them from growing. This drug is not effective against colds, flu or other viral infections.
Differences
Meropenem is also a carbapenem antibiotic that is active against common pathogens such as penicillin-sensitive, methicillin sensitive and anaerobes. Meropenem and Meropenem Trihydrate are generally used as injections. Meropenem injection can be used in combination with other antibacterial drugs, but the clinical effect is not yet known. Each bottle of injection or infusion solution powder contains 1141.56 mg of Meropenem Trihydrate, equivalent to 1 gram of anhydrous Meropenem. Meropenem (Mero-O 200 tablets) is also available in tablet form and is mainly used to treat lung and urinary tract infections. In addition, it can also be used to treat skin and gynecological infections.
In an in vitro study investigating the effect of Meropenem Trihydrate on human paraoxonase 1 (hPON1) activity, it was found that Meropenem Trihydrate is a potent inhibitor of human serum hPON1 and inhibits enzyme activity in a non-competitive manner.
