A mixture of 2,6-dimethylphenol (5.18 g, 42.4 mmol), potassium carbonate (7.33 g, 53.0 mmol) and ethyl bromoacetate (5.17 mL, 46.6 mmol) in acetone (40 mL) was stirred at ambient temperature for 24 hours. The reaction was filtered and the filtered solid was rinsed with acetone. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo, taken up in ethyl acetate (100 mL), washed with 0.1N sodium hydroxide (3×60 mL), dried (magnesium sulfate) and concentrated in vacuo to afford the crude title compound (8.79 g, quant.) as a pale yellow liquid. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6): δ 1.17 (3H, t), 2.18 (6H, s), 4.14 (2H, q), 4.40 (2H, s), 6.86-6.98 (3H, m)
