Phosphorus trichloride (PCl3, 8 mL) was added dropwise to a methanol (50 mL) solution of glutaric acid (13.2 g, 0.10 mol) under ice-bath cooling and continuous stirring. Upon completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed from the reaction mixture under reduced pressure. Subsequently, the resulting residue was distilled under reduced pressure. Fractions with boiling points of 110-112 °C were collected to give dimethyl glutarate in a yield of 14.7 g and 92% yield.

Reaction Conditions:
with sulfuric acid at 20; for 18 h;
Steps:
Dimethyl glutarate (1l)7
Glutaric anhydride (29.4 mmol, 3.35 g) was dissolved in anhydrous MeOH (100 mL) and conc. H2SO4 (5.9 mmol, 0.31 mL) was added. After being stirred at room temperature for 18 h, the mixture was concentrated to a half volume and quenched with water (40 mL) afterwards. The aqueous phase was extracted with CH2Cl2 (3 x 50 mL), the combined organic phases were washed with brine (30 mL), dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to give dimethyl glutarate 1l (4.53 g, 96%) as a colourless clear oil; 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ =1.96 (quint, J = 7.2 Hz, 2H), 2.39 (t, J = 7.2 Hz, 4H).
