2-oxo-pentanedioic acid was dissolved in THF under nitrogen. To this solution was addedone equivalent of NaH. The resulting sodium salt of the a-keto acid was then treateddropwise with one equivalent of (1R, 2R, 4S)-2-bromo-1-isopropyl-4-methyl-cyclohexaneover a period of 100 hours.
