To a mixture of aluminum trichloride (120 g) and sodium chloride (40 g) heated to 1000C was added 4-bromophenyl acrylate (10.5 g, 50.7 mmol), and the mixture was stirred for 15 min. Then, the mixture was heated to 1400C, and the mixture was stirred for 45 min. The mixture was poured into ice-cooled water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with saturated brine and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane=20/80) and recrystallized (ethyl acetate/hexane) to give the title compound (3.82 g, yield 36%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ: 2.68 - 2.83 (2H, m) , 2.99 - 3.09 (2H, m) , 6.71 (IH, d, J = 8.8 Hz) , 7.58 (IH, d, J = 8.8 Hz) , 9.01 (IH, s) .
